DECEMBER 2011

We are delighted to announce we were successful in the RBS Community Force funding received over £6,000 for our club. This is a massive amount of money for Bishopton Rugby and will make a significant difference to what we can achieve as we grow the game of Rugby in Bishopton and our surrounding communities

Thanks again to all to helped achieve this fantastic result.

APRIL 2011

Promoted!
Huge congratulations to coach David Jackson and his players for achieving promotion to West Division 2 next year. Bishopton finished in second position behind Lanark losing just 3 league matches over the season, overtaking Hyndland by winning 15-7 in a fiery encounter at Holmpark on April 9th and sealing the deal up in Lochgilphead on April 23rd with a 19-10 win against Mid Argyll. This is just reward for the work that everyone in the club has put in over the season, and caps a great year for the village club.

And the news keep coming, well done Steve Webb
The Bishopton newsdesk has just heard that Steve Webb, who retired from the playing side of the game after an injury last year, was given the "best new referee of the year" award at the West of Scotland Rugby Referees Society AGM meeting on the 27th April. We are delighted with his success and very proud of his achievements, we look forward to watching his progress up the leagues!

MARCH 2011

Bishopton Rugby strengthens links with Park Mains High School
Last season BRFC donated money to Park Mains to allow them to buy a set of school rugby jerseys, this season our vounteer coaches are going one better by assisting on the pitch. As well as helping out at the school training sessions on Monday evenings, Andy Jackson and Stu Hunt took time out to coach the Park Mains teams at the Renfrewshire 7 aside tournament held at Paisley's Anchor ground on 23rd March. Park Mains fielded two teams in the tournament, the first team which consisted predominantly of the Bishopton Rugby 'young guns' finished 3rd in the tournament.

Micro Rugby Trip to Firhill
As part of their ongoing rugby education, Bishopton Rugby are taking a gaggle (more than 20!) of micro-rugby players and their parents to watch the Glasgow Warriors vs Ulster match on Friday, March 25th. Meeting for a dinner buffet at the club at 6:00, they will be boarding the bus at 7:00 and returning to Bishopton Sports and Social Club by 10:00. There are limited seats left on the bus, if you want to be included then email us at micro@bishoptonrugby.com to let us know. All-inclusive tickets are generously being subsidised by the club and stand at £10 for adults, the children are free.

Bishopton field a second XV !

For the first time in many years Bishopton Rugby is delighted to report that on March 5th 2011 we managed to put out 2 legitimate rugby teams playing at different locations at the same time! The 1st XV were playing against Lanark away in the league (26-17 loss) and the 2nds in a home friendly to Paisley which they won (7-5). This is testament to all of the hard work put in by coaches and committee over the last few seasons, and is confirmation that Bishopton Rugby is 'on the up'!

FEBRUARY 2011

Bishopton Rugby Club Race Night

Another great event was held down at the club on the 26th Feb - the Bishopton Race Night. We could have done with a few more folk to fill the hall, but the night was still a rampant success, both on fun and fund-raising aspects. In total £320 was given back to the club, this will help towards the funding of the many new initiatives we have introduced this year. Thanks as always to organiser Stuart Hunt, as well as to Andy and Julie Jackson for their help with the buffet.

The only negative of the night was the injury to Simon Hardie who fell at the last whilst attempting to steer horse number 2 back onto the track. The result of the race is still under dispute as the photo finish image is partially obscured by Simon's prone body, there is also a steward's enquiry being held following the complaint of one of the owners whose horse apparently was in the lead but got booted off the racecourse during 'the incident'. Fortunately both horse and Simon are now recovering well.

DECEMBER 2010

Bishopton Rugby Club Quiz Night, 27th November

A big thank you to all players, parents and friends of Bishopton RFC for their attendance and contribution to the quiz night. We raised a fantastic £610 across tickets sales, auction and raffle. We also broke the 100 mark in terms of attendees which contributed to a great night enjoyed by all. A special mention to local businesses:

and Relax Coffee Shop
 Morrisons
Tom Wylie Jewellery

They all contributed prizes and supported our club. It goes without saying that we should try and support these businesses as they have supported our club.

The micro section plan to ask the committee for funds to assist with a trip to a Glasgow Warriors fixture in the new year. Hopefully all players and parents will be able attend.

Look out also for our next social event in the new year.

OCTOBER 2010

John Ferguson
We are very sad to have to pass on the upsetting news that John Ferguson, our friend and coach at the Club, died suddenly on 21st October of a heart attack.
Clearly as a club we shall all mourn his passing. John had only been with Bishopton for a short time but he had made many friends and he will be very sadly missed All our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Matthew Balcombe, Scotland Mascot
We are delighted to announce that Matthew Balcombe will be representing Bishopton Rugby Junior Section as a club mascot for the Scotland v South Africa test match in Murrayfield on Saturday 20th November 2010. Matthew's name was drawn in a ballot of the 11 minis and midis who were in attendance at the first session in the rain on November 1st last year, every one of whom is still with us. Well done, Matthew, have fun!

Like a phoenix from the ashes
In December last year (see below) we reported that 'Club Stalwart Martin Rainey' had marked his permanent retirement from game by setting fire to his boots. We apologise for the misleading report, it seems his insistence that he had retired was simply a ploy to avoid getting hassle for not turning up to training when the weather got cold and wet. It is now warm again and he has been seen on more than one occasion galloping about the paddock in a shiny new pair of boots, and rumour has it that he might actually feature on the team list for this weekend's match. Welcome back, Martin - have you ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?

AUGUST 2010

There is a buzz in the air at Holmpark
What a superb start to the 2010 season for Bishopton Rugby! On Saturday 28th August Bishopton hosted and won the 4th annual Renfrewshire Tournament with teams from Renfrew, Paisley(x2), Kilmacolm and Bishopton taking part. The weather held out for us and the park, for the first time in several years, looked superb now that the recent ground-works have been completed. The tournament was played in a league format with all teams playing each other in 20 minute games - so 10 games were played in all. There was some super quality rugby played and all four clubs will take away some positives before the cup matches mark the start of the season proper next week. The day finished with both Paisley 1sts and Bishopton on 10 points (each winning 3 matches and drawing 0-0 with each other) - but the Cup was taken by the Bishopton team with a superior points difference of 6 points - a single converted try! Well done to all the teams, it was really a superb show of the growing strength of Renfrewshire Rugby.

On the home front we are delighted to pass on that the player numbers are already well up on last year, and the numbers at ttraining have reached an almost unprecedented level. On Saturday we turned up with a squad of 24 [players, including 7 who are under 19 yrs old. Welcome to all of the new members. And it keeps getting better for Bishopton Rugby - the junior section broke through the 60 mark on the last Sunday of August and is now well in the way to the season target of 100 active participants. The new micro section has started with a bang (a steep learning curve for everyone involed - one of the coaches at the end of an exhausting session for all was heard to say that it was 'harder than herding frogs'!), and the mini and midi sections continue to grow steadily. If you want to read more then please go to the 'Junior' tab at the top of this page.

....and here we go with season 2010/11!!
Exciting things are afoot at Bishopton Rugby Club as preparations continue for the coming season. The pitch works are underway, and new drainage pipes installed and the wet corner has been raised and turfed. The earthquake machine is due on site shortly and we will be following that with hundreds of tonnes of sand and topsoil to help deal with the surface water that has been getting worse over the last few years. The plan is to have the pitch in top condition by the start of the season, August 28th sees Bishopton host the annual Renfrewshire tournament between us, Birkmyre, Paisley and Renfrew.

Junior Rugby - Midi, Mini and Micro sections
On Sunday August 22nd Bishopton Rugby kicked off our junior rugby season with a family day down at Holmpark. The new micro section started the event at 12:00 with a great session attended by 12 wee ones and their parents - followed by an all-out mini and midi extravenganza attended by players, parents, coaches, senior players, friends, John Barclay, Peter Murchie and Clyde the Mascot from Glasgow Rugby. The barbecue was red-hot as were the activities - bouncy castles, sumo wresting and the gladiator game providing formal entertainment and the coaches running kicking, passing and catching, running and tackling workshops around the ground. All in all a fantastic day was had by all, and this season's junior rugby kicked off with a bang. See the junior pages of this website for more information on how you can become part of Bishopton Rugby.
